The Semana Grande or Aste Nagusia is, as its name suggests, a holiday that is lived in style, not only by the people of San Sebastian, but also by the visitors. And it is that, who tries, repeats. So if you dare to experience it this year, you run the risk that you do not want to miss another one!
Do you want to know how donostiarras celebrate their main festivities? Do you want to know more about this tradition and its origins? Keep reading!
Origins of the Big Week
Since he has been right, every Donostiarra knows that August is synonymous with Semana Grande, but what are the true origins of this festivity? To know them, it would be necessary to go back to the year 1876. In these times, the celebration was linked to the bullfights, expanding little by little the agenda of activities with fireworks, music, festivals, etc.
Then, almost without planning, it was shaping the Semana Grande, the quintessential holiday of San Sebastian. Since its inception, the success was resounding, not only among the inhabitants of the city, but more and more visitors came from other parts of Spain and even from the south of France.
At present, the bullfighting events have been relegated to a mere activity more than the agenda of the festivities, but that has not prevented that the Big Week continues installed in the calendar and in the hearts of all.

The holidays of August: are you coming this 2018?
This summer 2018 the Aste Nagusia comes as strong as every year. On this occasion, it will be held from August 11 to 18, since, as tradition dictates, it always starts on the Saturday before August 15.
The starting gun will be given by the emblematic and thunderous Cañonazo, as well as the interpretation of the song Artillero. These two events will start seven days of celebration and good atmosphere throughout the city. One of the must-see activities is the International Fireworks Competition, which will fill the night sky of San Sebastian with light and color.

There will also be room for sports activities (from beach volleyball to Basque pelota) and, of course, for music. For the Sagüés’ stage, it is expected to welcome this year artists like Jarabe de Palo, Amaia Montero or Vendetta, in addition to many others.
But that's not all, there will be workshops, parades of giants and big heads, activities for the little ones, etc. The best thing about the Big Week is that it is for everyone!
