We will give you all the details you need regarding the activities held in Donosti for San Juan’s, celebration, but first of all, let us give you an overview of the San Juan’s origins. San Juan’s night is held every year as a celebration of the summer solstice building up bondfires. This tradition comes directly from the Antic Age in order to “give more strength to the sun” as it is slowly getting weaker and consequently days are shortening up.
If you happen to be in Donostia in June 23rd write down the following events; you do not want to miss this!

1.- Blessing of the Tree, Plaza Constitución. This is probably the most famous part of this tradition in San Sebastian. Every year and usually starting at 7pm the Basque folkloric group Goizaldi is famous for dancing next to a tree located on the square after its benediction by the priest of San Vicente’s Chruch. Next step, stay and watch it burning. After Goizaldi’s performance the bondfire will be set up. Feel free to come a little closer and grab a piece of bark: it brings luck and happiness.
