The Countdown to the 67th Annual San Sebastián International Film Festival Starts Now
Every September, for a few days San Sebastián becomes the worldwide epicenter of the seventh art. The San Sebastián International Film Festival (Donostia Zinemaldia) will celebrate its 67th edition with a few surprises and plenty of famous faces. It is worth your while to visit Donostia on those dates to be a part of the exclusive and distinguished atmosphere that will envelop the city. Now you have plans for September 20th-28th! As always, we’re waiting to welcome you with open arms at our central hotel in San Sebastián.
A little history
One of the most interesting aspects of the San Sebastián International Film Festival is that it has been taking place without interruption since 1953. On September 21st of that year, an event with a cinematic calling and grand ambitions was born. Indeed, after first being considered a non-competitive festival, it quickly gained the ability to award prizes.
That’s how the iconic Golden and Silver Shells were born, the highest honors awarded in this cinematographic contest.
After nearly 70 years, the list of celebrities who have passed through the San Sebastián International Film Festival is endless. Legendary figures such as Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini, Audrey Hepburn, and Orson Welles paraded on the red carpet in the early years. But there are many more who have raised the competition to the pinnacle, including Woody Allen, Javier Bardem, Mel Gibson, and Kevin Kostner, to name just a few.

The 2019 edition of the festival
The 67th edition of the festival will be led by a celebrity. Our most international actress, Penélope Cruz, is not just the face on the official 2019 posters—she will also be receiving the Donostia Award. This is the festival’s most important honorary award and could not be given to a more deserving recipient than the Madrid-born actress, winner of an Oscar and three Goya prizes over the course of her career.
We also already know which films will be competing for the coveted Golden Shell, the festival’s highest honor. “La Trinchera Infinita”, from Jon Garaño, “La Hija de Un Ladrón,” from Belén Funes, and “Mientras Dure la Guerra” from Alejandro Amenábar will face off for the biggest prize.
Other films in the Official Selection will include “Diecisiete” from Daniel Sánchez Arévalo’. A special screening in this same section will show “La Odisea de los Giles,” from Sebastián Borensztein.
Passes go on sale September 15th, and are available online ahead of time. At our hotel by the Concha Bay, the festival is just steps away!
