47th Heineken Jazzaldia San Sebastian
Some European jazz festivals are performed in great cities. Some are close to spectacular mountains. Some have views of the ocean beaches. Some have rivers. The Jazz Festival in Donostia Heiniken has all the above, as well as one of the most beautiful urban beaches in the world, the bay of la Concha. On the seafront you will find our hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra.
From 19th to 23rd of July this year will not be just air passing through the “Peines del viento” in San Sebastian, It is gonna be also notes of Jazz!
Moreover, as you can easily see from the poster of the 47th edition Heiniken Jazzaldia the trumpets are going to sound in San Sebastian in late July. The author of the cartel is a young Biscayan, Jon Artetxe. Commenting his work in an interview to Diario Vasco he said: " I admire the work of Eduardo Chillida and I wanted get inspiration from his work. I got inspiration on the Peine del Viento to symbolize music as the trumpet, I hand-wrote the '47 'number of the edition, with a stroke that also is inspired by the works of Chillida, and I supported all the graphics on the label Heineken as it is rock.” “White rules the poster design with a concession to the blue as a symbol of the sea and San Sebastian."
We are now in the 47th edition of the festival. The first edition of the Festival of Jazz in San Sebastian was in 1966.The first edition of the Festival of Jazz in San Sebastian was in 1966. Since then this festival has become a true barometer of world Jazz culture making room both known authors as well as new trend artists, involving more than 1,400 musicians. It is the oldest jazz festival in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe.
The setting is the wonderful city of San Sebastian and the historic main stage is the Plaza de la Trinidad. In addition to this space, the concerts are held in incredible locations such as the Kursaal Auditorium, the terraces of the Kursaal in Zurriola Beach, the Victoria Eugenia Theatre and the Anoeta Velodrome.
Moreover, since 1994, the Festival of Jazz in San Sebastian assigns the award “Donostiako Jazzaildia” to a leading figure greatly contributing to the enrichment of Jazz and the influence on later generations of musicians. Since then mythical jazz figures such as, among others, Doc Cheatham in 1994, the American jazz bassist Ray Brown in 2001, Wayne Shorter, known as the best jazz composer alive, in 2007 and Toots Thielemans, one of the greatest harmonica players of the 20th century, last year, have received this award.
